Surge Manhole System

CPM Group has an unrivalled history of development, introducing innovative products and
partnerships into the market. Continuing with this company ethos, a partnership with Funke Kunstoffe

G.M.B.H. of Germany has developed a Surge Manhole flushing system offering state of the art
technology. The surge manhole is patented throughout Europe.
The Funke Group of companies is among the leading suppliers of plastic drainage systems. Since its
formation, the company has expanded into a successful group with its expertise, commitment and
steadily expanding product range giving a leading position in the German market.

Surge Manhole Overview

The Surge Manhole is an automatic flushing system which is designed to keep drains clear of
settleable solids, grits and silts.

The build up of silt and sediment within sewerage and stormwater systems have many implications
such as:

· Reduced flow characteristics
· Increase chance of foul odour problems
· Ongoing cleaning costs, regular jetting
· Damage to pipes by jetting
· Disruption to traffic flows during cleaning operations
· Increased rat population

The Surge Manhole is the most long term cost effective solution to these problems, only requiring
rainwater to activate the flushing system.

The Surge Manhole contains maintenance free components which is all incorporated into a reinforced
concrete chamber. The system is ideal for difficult to access pipe systems & can be used instead of
small pumping stations and for pipe system that are laid on flat gradients.

Advantages

The Surge Manhole flushing system can be installed into new or existing sewer or surface water drains, and with its continual flushing action ensures the pipelines are kept clean. The cistern volume amount is also adjustable from 400 to 750 litres per flush. The Surge Manhole has the added advantage because of the flushing action, it can be used instead of small Pumping Stations.

The above picture shows the flushing action of The Surge Manhole

When sewers are flushed frequently, the treatment plants are charged more regularly. Depending on
the annual rainfall, catchment area and gradient of pipe work one Surge Manhole can service drain
lengths up 1000 mts with up to 100 surge flushes per annum.

When Stormwater drains are regularly flushed the outfalls at the beginning of heavier rainfalls are
significantly less polluted.

• Installed like a conventional manhole

Retrofit Install

• Two versions are available, one
for new sewers and the other for
   retro fit
• Contains maintenance free
   components
• Flushes automatically without any
  additional energy to trigger flush
• Self starting and therefore nearly
  maintenance-free
• The Surge Manhole flushing is
  done without damaging the pipe
  material
• Long term reduce cleaning costs
• Can use rainwater from roof areas
  or impermeable surfaces e.g. car
  parks etc.

Product Information

Chamber Details

The Surge Manhole consists of a pre-cast reinforced concrete 1200 diameter 1170mm in height
pre-assembled unit. The Chamber is fabricated using a base unit complying with BS EN 1917:2002.

There are two versions are available Type U which is used for new installations & Type A which is
used for retrofit over an existing manhole base.

The Surge Manhole has been pre-fitted with an inlet for 150mm pipe (location and pipe size can be
adapted to suit customer requirements) and the base has a 200mm flush water outlet in the form of a
bend.

Flushing Detail:

Rainwater is used to flush the drainage system and soon as the cistern is filled with rainwater the ball
automatically floats out of the way. The cistern volume is adjustable from 400 – 750 litres per flush.

Within the base of the cistern a floating ball is installed as a shut-off device which is placed within a
hemispherical chamber base containing two seals and an airtight overflow channel. The bottom is
funnel shaped towards the flush outlet. Thus the ball automatically rolls into the bottom opening. This
shut-off is water tight due to its self weight and with the help of water pressure at rising water level.

Operating Principle

1. The storage basin is supplied by rainwater from either the street inlet or from a roof down pipe.

2. As soon as the set-point of the water level is reached, the float rises and the air escapes out of     the overflow pipe and the water flows under the ball.

3. The ball jumps out of its place and the flushing process starts. Product Development
